November 2009 Minutes

November 12, 2009 – Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Jerry Owens at 6:05, November 12, 2009.  The minutes of the previous meeting were not read.

Jerry reviewed the parameters of belonging to the Wannabee Hobby Beekeepers as follows:

  • Membership can either be for an individual or a family.  All family members would be included in a family membership including (especially) children.
  • The meeting in January will be our first formal meeting as a club.  At that meeting an election of officers will be held, the amount of dues, if any, will be determined, and other factors pertaining to the management of the club will be defined.
  • We, as a club, need to identify the purpose of the club, i.e. promote pollination, collect honey for use and/or sale, as an information source or a combination of these aspects.

Jerry asked for feedback on these questions before the next meeting.  Alex suggested we send by-laws out so that the first reading and discussion can be held in December.  Jerry will email the by-laws out to all.

Jerry also passed out sample applications from the Department of Agriculture for registration of apiaries.  The hobby beekeeper can have up to 49 hives; 50 or more hives is considered a commercial enterprise. The web address for these forms is:  www.state.sd.us/doa/das.

There was general discussion of terms used in beekeeping such as ”super”  and what constitutes a hive.  Jerry also asked if anyone had experienced large, black “robber bees” as he had.

At this point Jerry showed various frames with comb to the group and general discussion was held as to what materials were used, how and why the different combs were made, etc.

The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.  The next meeting will be held in the same location (upstairs meeting room of the Rapid City Public Library) on December 10, 2009.
