June 8, 2010 Meeting Minutes
The regular meeting of the Wannabee Hobby Beekeepers was called to order at 6:05 p.m. on June 8, 2010 at the Canyon Lake Senior Center by Jerry Owens.
The minutes of the May 11, 2010 meeting were read. Rita moved to approve the minutes as read; Karen seconded the motion which was carried unanimously.
John Halverson gave the treasurers report. As of May 28, 2010, a total of $110.00 in membership dues had been collected. There are no outstanding bills. John brought up the fact that there is no set procedure for the disbursement of funds. At this point, the club only has a debit card. Patty moved that the treasure may spend up to $20.00 on club business and any amount over $20.00 should be approved by the general paid membership at the next meeting. This was seconded by Lee and approved unanimously. John will check on the cost of obtaining checks.
There was general discussion regarding the harvesting of honey. John posed the question as to whether the club wanted to purchase an extractor. A committee was formed to look into all aspects of having a club-owned extractor. The committee consists of: John Halverson, Dave Braveheart and Les Wermers.
Jerry gave a progress report on the hives that he has visited. There has been a wide variety of status; some have had little or no attention and are doing great, others have had lots of attention and are not doing as well, four have had to be re-queened, a number are doing exceptionally well.
Jerry stated that so far there have been six swarms of bees that have been captured. These swarms have been given to club members. Any member who is interested in learning about capturing swarms is encouraged to come and help. Bob Steele has taken the lead in this endeavor and is duly named “the swarm guy”. Jerry turned the floor over to Bob who described the process of capturing a swarm, some dos and don’ts, and some of specifics about the swarms he has captured. John suggested calling the news crew the next time we get a call on a swarm.
Patty brought up the idea of having a budget or finance committee. The general consensus was that this may be premature. At this point it was decided that members should email Jerry with suggestions as to what they would like the club to do and/or provide. This will help determine the need, if any, for a budget.
Jerry asked for input regarding compiling a list of email addresses and phone numbers of members for use by members. There were several suggestions about blog sites and meet-up sites that can also be used. It was agreed that Jerry can send a list of paid members to paid member.
Jerry announced that he will be gone for the July meeting. John suggested the July meeting be a potluck and held on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Canyon Lake Park. John so moved, Patty seconded, the motion passed unanimously.
Jay Erickson showed the package his new queen came in. Jerry showed some comb from one of the captured hives and also a wasp’s nest.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
