October 13, 2010
The regular meeting of the Wannabee Hobby Beekeepers was called to order at 6:05 p.m. on October 13, 2010 at the Canyon Lake Senior Center by Jerry Owens.
The minutes of the September meeting were not read by consensus of the attending club members.
John Halverson gave a report on the clubs current monetary standings. We have $180.00 in assets and no outstanding debts. We have 30 paid up members. We discussed raising the dues to $15.00 for next year so the club can purchase an extractor for members use. We encourage all of you to express your opinions on this matter and we will again discuss this at the November meeting.
A very important item to watch out for is the venting of the hive during the winter. Make sure that all the holes in the hive are open as well as the small opening in the bottom hive reducer. The warm air needs to escape to prevent condensation buildup in the hive which will turn to cold water and fall on the bees killing them.
The extraction committee will present different options on the extractor subject, including their recommendation, at the next meeting. We need a vote on this by December if we are to do anything about getting an extractor in 2011.
The subject of extraction was discussed; Jerry will have an extraction party at his place (4140 Canyon Lake Drive) on Sunday the 24th of October 2010. Please call ahead of time to let me know how many frames you will be bringing to be extracted. Also bring a container to hold the honey. We will not be straining the honey at this time. I will get back to you on times so there won’t be a waiting line and you all can get in and out in a timely manner.
Lee Alley told us of a talk he was giving at the senior center on October 14th. Unfortunately there was not time enough to get the word out to the club members for you to attend. So, I attended for you; wasn’t that nice! Lee has offered to give the presentation to the club at our next meeting on November 10, 2010. The talk w/ slide show took about one hour, and what an hour that was! Lee did a fabulous job, I learned more about the social structure of the bee colony than I had ever thought possible. Lee has done a vast amount of studying on this subject and is willing to share it with us. I highly recommend that you attend the next meeting and listen to Lee.
At the January meeting, 2011 we will be voting on new officers to lead our membership in the New Year. Please give any suggestions of club structure you would like to see changed and nominate new people for the offices of President, Vic President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
We all need to keep track of what we are doing and share our successes and failures with the club members to assist us all in having a successful experience in our beekeeping. Lee suggested keeping a log book on your hive.
A final note: The meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month. The next meeting will be on the 10th of November 2010. The meeting time remains 6:00 pm to 8: pm.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
